Norway strengthens its air defence with new orders of NASAMS components from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Two new contracts with a total value of just over one billion Norwegian kroner were signed on 31 October between Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency and Kongsberg.
The deal means that the Norwegian NASAMS units will receive new command posts, improved communication systems, and replacements for the current radio systems. This is intended to increase mobility, reduce vulnerability, and provide faster decision support in critical situations.
– The government prioritises strengthening the air defence. This upgrade is an important step to protect both the defence and critical infrastructure, says Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik.
NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) was jointly developed by Kongsberg and the American company Raytheon during the 1990s. The system is currently used by 13 countries and is a central part of Norway's air defence.
Kongsberg describes the delivery as the latest generation of NASAMS, designed to meet both current and future threats. Parts of the equipment are based on proven technology but have been adapted to meet today's operational requirements.
Since 2024, the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency has signed several contracts covering four NASAMS batteries with new launchers, fire control systems, and modern missiles. The country is now also investing in components with long delivery times.
– NASAMS is strategically important for Norway's defence capability. This is a delivery that contributes to both national security and increased resilience in the defence, says Eirik Lie, CEO of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
