Norway, together with allies, is financing a new support package for Ukraine worth a total of approximately 5 billion Norwegian kroner. The Norwegian contribution amounts to just over 1.3 billion Norwegian kroner and aims to ensure deliveries of American materiel.
– Our support for Ukraine remains steadfast. Norway, along with several others, will ensure that Ukraine quickly receives the necessary American military materiel through the PURL initiative, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, in a communiqué from the government.
The announcement was made in conjunction with the NATO defence ministers' meeting in Brussels on 12 February. The support is channelled through the initiative Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which is used to maintain a stable supply of American weapons, according to the communiqué.
– With this contribution, Norway will continue to be one of the largest contributors to military support packages for Ukraine. This assistance is particularly important for delivering American air defence in line with Ukraine's highest priority needs, says Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik.
According to the Defence Minister, the weapons deliveries form the foundation for the defence of Ukrainian airspace. This is described as a prioritised measure as Russia escalates attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
– The package will strengthen our ability to defend our airspace, our people, and our infrastructure. PURL is effective, and Norway's leadership makes it stronger, writes Ukraine's Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, on X.
