Norway Chooses Type 26 Frigates from the United Kingdom

Norway has decided to collaborate with the United Kingdom to acquire Type 26 frigates, marking the largest defense procurement in Norway's modern history. The collaboration includes industrial cooperation and shared technical specifications.

Norway has chosen to initiate a strategic collaboration with the United Kingdom for the procurement of new frigates. The decision marks the largest defense materiel acquisition in Norway in modern times. The choice of supplier was preceded by an evaluation in which France, Germany, and the USA also participated. According to the government, the Chief of Defense has also recommended the British solution.

The British Type 26 frigates are to be delivered starting in 2030 and will be developed in close cooperation between the countries' armed forces. The ships are specifically adapted for anti-submarine warfare and will be equipped with helicopters and a large cargo space for, for example, unmanned vehicles.

– Norway and the United Kingdom are close allies, with common interests and strong ties. I am confident that this strategic partnership is the right way forward, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in a press release from the Norwegian government.

The frigates will be built according to common technical specifications to facilitate joint operation, maintenance, and training. The possibility of using mixed crews from both countries is also seen as a future opportunity.

According to the Norwegian government, the United Kingdom has guaranteed an industrial commitment in Norway equivalent to the entire contract value. The next step is for Norway and the United Kingdom to finalize a governmental agreement regulating the cooperation. Thereafter, contract negotiations with the main supplier BAE Systems will commence. An investment decision will then be presented to the Storting.
