Nordic Countries in Agreement on Joint Drone Procurements

Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have signed agreements to coordinate the procurement of drone systems. Two specific procurements of micro and mini drones are now set to commence.

Nordic Countries in Agreement on Joint Drone Procurements

Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden have signed a joint agreement on cooperation in the procurement of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The Nordic defence materiel directors signed the agreements in Helsinki (capital of Finland) on 22 October.

The agreements will enable coordinated procurements of both micro and mini drones, with support from NATO's procurement agency (NSPA) and the Danish Defence Materiel and Procurement Agency (FMI). In addition to the procurements, the cooperation will also include research and development, training, and information exchange.

– There is extensive work underway to rapidly strengthen the Swedish Armed Forces' UAS capacity in various areas. This Nordic agreement provides opportunities for better contracts with suppliers and increased cooperation between our countries' defences in the UAS field, says Eva Hagwall, Acting Defence Materiel Director at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

The cooperation will also strengthen Nordic support for Ukraine and contribute to the development of common standards for the use of drone systems in the defence sector.

According to Finland, which coordinated the agreement, the hope is that joint procurements will reduce the countries' individual costs while strengthening the industry's capacity. Technological development is rapid, and Nordic cooperation is seen as a way to meet both common and national needs more effectively.

– We facilitate multinational operations in the Nordic region by strengthening cooperation in drone systems. At the same time, we intensify Nordic support for Ukraine, says Finland's Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen in a press release from the country's Ministry of Defence.
