New Technology Prize for Security and Preparedness

Teknikföretagen (the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries) and Säkerhets- och Försvarsföretagen (SOFF, the Swedish Security and Defence Industry Association) are establishing a new award to recognise Swedish companies developing technology with both civilian and military applications. The new Swedish Dual-Use Prize aims to highlight innovations that strengthen Sweden's preparedness and security.

The award targets companies developing dual-use technology — solutions that can contribute to both civil crisis preparedness and defence and security capability, according to a press release from the organisations.

– In an uncertain world, it is especially important to demonstrate how crucial our companies, our technical capability, and our capacity for innovation are in building a stronger Sweden, says Pia Sandvik, CEO of Teknikföretagen.

According to Robert Limmergård, Secretary General of SOFF, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has demonstrated the critical importance of technological innovation for both civil and military preparedness.

– Sweden already possesses uniquely strong expertise in this area. But the war in Ukraine has shown how decisive innovation and technical knowledge are in strengthening both civil and military preparedness in times of crisis and conflict, he says.

Nominations for the award are open until 21 April. A jury will then select three finalists, who will present their submissions at the organisations' joint annual meeting in May. The winner will be announced at the event, with the award presented by Defence Minister Pål Jonson.

The jury comprises Lena Gillström, CEO of BAE Systems Bofors; Jessica Öberg, CEO of Combitech; Marie Bengtsson, CEO of Advenica; Lieutenant General Carl-Johan Edström, Chief of the Swedish Defence Staff (Försvarsstaben); Pia Sandvik, CEO of Teknikföretagen; and Robert Limmergård, Secretary General of SOFF.
