The Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket) has handed over the first phase of the renovation and expansion of the naval base in Karlskrona (southern Sweden) to the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten). The new submarine pier is complete and will be able to accommodate larger submarines.
Work began in autumn 2024 and also encompasses the refurbishment of quays that had reached the end of their technical service life. The quays have been adapted for increased operational activity and climate-proofed against rising sea levels.
– This is a very successful project, where the key to success, as so often, is collaboration. The Swedish Fortifications Agency faces several harbour renovations ahead, and we will carry the lessons learned from this project forward, says Ulrika Hörgren, Project Director at the Swedish Fortifications Agency, in a press release.
The project was completed six months ahead of schedule. According to the Swedish Fortifications Agency, the carbon footprint has been reduced by approximately one third, partly through reduced use of concrete and materials with lower emissions.
Working conditions have also been improved, including the removal of hazardous elements associated with bunkering and gangway operations.
The renovation of the naval base now continues with additional sections, including the Fleet's ship pier and the tugboat pier.
