Lieutenant General Guillaume N. Beaurpere has taken over as the new head of NATO's command for coordinating military support and training to Ukraine, NSATU. At the same time, NATO announced that the organisation will gradually see greater European leadership.
At a ceremony in Wiesbaden on 3 August, Lieutenant General Guillaume N. Beaurpere took over as commander of NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU). He succeeds Lieutenant General Curtis A. Buzzard, who has led the command since 2024. This was announced by NATO.
NSATU is responsible for coordinating deliveries of military equipment and training to Ukraine from NATO member states and partner countries. The organisation was established to consolidate and coordinate support for the Ukrainian armed forces.
In connection with the change of command, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Alexus G. Grynkewich, stated that NSATU will continue to develop. According to him, command is expected to be taken over by a European or Canadian officer in about a year's time, while parts of the operations within the Security Assistance Group, Ukraine (SAG-U) are transferred to NSATU.
"More effective, purposeful and long-term support, with increased European leadership in implementation," Grynkewich said, according to NATO's press release.
According to NATO, the changes are intended to contribute to increased efficiency without affecting support to Ukraine, which continues to be described as one of the alliance's highest priorities. The transfer is also highlighted as part of European allies taking on greater responsibility within NATO, as well as part of the NATO 3.0 initiative.
