NATO and the European Union are working to improve military mobility across Europe, with infrastructure, regulatory barriers and defence production among the priorities discussed during European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius’ visit to NATO Headquarters on 28 October.
According to a statement from NATO, Kubilius met Secretary General Mark Rutte and addressed NATO ambassadors in the North Atlantic Council. Discussions focused on military readiness, increased defence production and continued support for Ukraine.
Military mobility was a central issue. NATO and the EU are working to facilitate the movement of troops and military equipment into and across Europe, including by addressing regulatory obstacles and ensuring that transport infrastructure can support military movements.
NATO stated that progress has been made in cooperation with the EU, although further work is needed to meet military readiness requirements.
The discussions also covered military assistance to Ukraine. Rutte welcomed the EU’s decision to enable funding through the Ukraine Support Loan for NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which supports the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine, including air defence systems.
