SOFF has released a report examining the experiences of fifty-two startup companies in the Swedish defense market during the period 2022–2024. The report highlights market developments, the driving forces behind the establishment of these companies, and the challenges they face in their attempts to navigate a complex and regulated industry.

– The large influx of new players is extremely important for the ecosystem. We – companies and authorities – have a responsibility to ensure that good ideas have fertile ground and benefit soldiers, pilots, and sailors, says Robert Limmergård at SOFF.

The report shows that several factors have contributed to the increase in new companies within the defense sector, including market growth following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and increased access to venture capital. The companies surveyed operate in a range of areas, from software and AI to unmanned systems and personal equipment.

Challenges often mentioned include the difficulty of contacting the Armed Forces and FMV, as well as lengthy processes and complex regulations. Several companies also expressed uncertainty about collaborating with established defense companies, regarding both benefits and potential risks.

SOFF states that they will continue to support these companies through knowledge-building activities and create more meeting places to facilitate collaboration and business development within the sector.
