Hungary is moving ever closer to a ratification of Sweden's application to NATO. On X/Twitter, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán writes that in a phone call with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, he confirms the Hungarian government's support for Sweden's NATO application.

He continues the post by stating that he has emphasised that the government continues to urge the Hungarian parliament to vote through Sweden's application to complete the ratification at the earliest possible opportunity.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed the call a few minutes later via his own page on X/Twitter, writing that he welcomes the Prime Minister's and his government's "clear support" for Swedish NATO membership. He concludes by stating that he looks forward to a ratification "as soon as the parliament convenes again".

Yesterday, during the day, the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote on X/Twitter that he has invited Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) to Budapest to negotiate Sweden's NATO accession. The announcement came after rumours began circulating that the Turkish parliament would hold a vote on Sweden's application.

Last night, during a press conference with Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) regarding the Turkish parliament's approval of Sweden's NATO application, he was asked whether this could prompt Hungary to accelerate the process. The Foreign Minister replied:

– It is indeed the case that Hungary has said they do not want to be the last to ratify Sweden. Now the Turkish parliament has done its part in this process, and President Erdogan's signature remains. So we naturally hope that the Turkish parliament initiates the process to ratify us as soon as possible.
