A new radar station on Magerøya in Nordkapp municipality is the next step in Norway's national radar initiative. The construction contract has been awarded to Harald Nilsen AS with a value of 113 million Norwegian kroner, according to a press release from Forsvarsbygg (Norwegian Defence Estates Agency).
The radar stations are being built in weather-exposed locations with limited construction periods, and the winter months are used for planning and procurement. The facility is expected to be completed by 2028. The technology acquisition is managed by Forsvarsmateriell (Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency), while the Norwegian Air Force will be the end user.
– Forsvarsbygg is pleased to have Harald Nilsen AS on board to build even more defence capability, says project manager Ylva Sneve in the press release.
Construction is planned to start in November 2025, with a break during the winter and continued work in the spring. The facility will be one of eleven new radar stations that Forsvarsbygg will establish by 2030 to strengthen Norway's defence capability. The radar station on Magerøya will replace an older facility in the area. The new building will have a protective radar dome and will be located slightly northwest of the current site.
