The chairman of the Defense Committee, Hans Wallmark (M), has been appointed as the new ambassador in Copenhagen. Wallmark will assume his new position in the fall, thereby leaving his seat in the Riksdag.

– For a true friend of the Nordics, there can be nothing finer, more enjoyable, and more important than representing Sweden in one of our neighboring countries. The government's decision today to appoint me as envoy to Denmark is, as everyone understands, something I am truly happy about, writes Hans Wallmark on Facebook and continues:

– Coming to Copenhagen this fall with Susanne is really something I look forward to. It also means that after 18 years, I am leaving the Riksdag and after almost 25 years, I am withdrawing from politics.

Wallmark became chairman of the Defense Committee in 2022 and in the same year also became chairman of Sweden's delegation to NATO's Parliamentary Assembly.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press release, he has been chairman of the Swedish-Danish Cultural Fund since 2010 and has been president of the Nordic Council twice.
