The government has appointed Göran Mårtensson as Sweden's new National Armaments Director (NAD). Mårtensson will assume the position on 1 December 2025 when the role is transferred from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to the Ministry of Defence.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the mission is evolving in line with Sweden's NATO membership and the deteriorating security situation. The government justifies the move with the need for increased governance and better coordination in materiel and export matters.

– Göran Mårtensson's extensive experience in defence, defence materiel, and his previous role as National Armaments Director provides a solid foundation for strengthening Sweden's position in this area, says Minister of Defence Pål Jonson (M).

The role of National Armaments Director will have a clearer strategic and security policy orientation and is now separated from the position of Director General of FMV. The director will represent Sweden in both bilateral and multilateral formats and will continue as chairman of the board of the European Defence Agency in the format for National Armaments Directors.

Simultaneously, a Defence Materiel Council is being established under the Ministry of Defence. The council will serve as a forum for dialogue and information sharing on defence materiel within the frameworks of NATO, the European Defence Agency (EDA), and the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO). The National Armaments Director will chair the council, which is being established on an interim basis.
