Germany has decided to procure eight remotely piloted aircraft systems of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian type through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). This is stated in a press release from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., published on 12 January 2026.
According to the press release, the procurement also includes four certifiable ground control stations. The first deliveries are expected to occur in 2028. The procurement is conducted by Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support in collaboration with NSPA.
The press release states that the MQ-9B SeaGuardian is intended for multi-mission environments and has long range and endurance. The system is reported to have satellite control, de-icing capability, and radar systems for maritime surveillance, with the option for anti-submarine warfare additions. It is also stated that the system is designed to operate in non-segregated airspace.
– “We’re thrilled that Germany has joined the list of NATO countries that have selected MQ-9B SeaGuardian,” says Linden Blue, CEO of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., in the press release.
NSPA states in the press release that the procurement is conducted within the framework of the MQ-9 Support Partnership, which aims to support coordinated acquisition and interoperability among NATO countries.
– “This Support Partnership demonstrates how NSPA enables efficient, effective and responsive multinational acquisitions for advanced, interoperable capabilities,” says Stacy A. Cummings, Director General of NSPA, in the press release.
