The defence ministers discussed Sweden's accession to NATO, continued support for Ukraine, and opportunities for deepened bilateral cooperation. Defence Minister Jonson also outlined the new government's priorities in the defence area. These include completing Sweden's integration for full NATO membership, increased support for Ukraine's defence, and the implementation of Sweden's upcoming EU presidency in 2023. Secretary of Defence Austin looked forward to welcoming Sweden into NATO. Sweden's geographical location and the capabilities of the Swedish defence would be an important contribution to strengthening the alliance's collective defence capability.
In April 2022, Secretary of Defence Austin initiated a contact group to support Ukraine's defence. So far, six meetings have been held in which Sweden has participated. Defence Minister Jonson thanked Secretary of Defence Austin for the American leadership in support of Ukraine.
– A strong transatlantic link and close cooperation with the United States are crucial for Europe's stability and prosperity. The conditions for deepening our bilateral cooperation will increase when Sweden becomes a member of NATO, says Defence Minister Pål Jonson on the government's website.
Sweden has long had close security and defence policy cooperation with the United States, and the Swedish Armed Forces regularly conduct joint exercises with the U.S. Armed Forces. In light of the upcoming Swedish NATO membership, discussions are now underway on how cooperation with the United States can be further developed.
