A delegation from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (Totalförsvarets forskningsinstitut, FOI) has visited the NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence (C2COE) in the Netherlands. The meeting focused on research in command, wargaming, and the integration of AI to strengthen cooperation within the alliance.

– Collaboration with nations and entities like FOI is of great importance, not only for us as a centre of expertise but also for the NATO alliance as a whole, says Colonel Mietta Groeneveld, head of C2COE, in a press release.

– Bridging the gap between the operational, academic, and industrial spheres gives our efforts impact. Only then can we operate with full effect.

The delegation arrived at the centre in Utrecht on 9 February. During the visit, the parties exchanged experiences regarding research in command, wargaming, doctrine development, and the cyber domain. The discussions also touched on methods for the rapid integration of AI in military decision-making processes, an area on which NATO recently released a report, as NDS has written about.

FOI's visit is linked in the press release to the Ministry of Defence's emphasis on the need for a rapid adaptation of command and control capabilities within the Swedish Armed Forces. This is described as crucial for Sweden's role as a newer member nation in NATO and for the ability to achieve strategic goals.

According to the press release from C2COE, the delegation also received a briefing on the centre's mission and added value for the alliance.
