The government plans to strengthen the review of foreign direct investments in protected activities by involving the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) in the process. The aim is to protect Sweden's critical infrastructure and manage risks associated with foreign ownership interests, writes the Ministry of Defence in a press release.

The Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP) has been responsible for reviewing foreign direct investments since December 2023.

With the government's new proposal in the budget bill for 2025, FOI will assist ISP in these reviews with its expertise in technology, security, and the ability to conduct risk and vulnerability assessments. FOI is proposed to receive 4 million kronor annually starting next year to support ISP.
