FMV has signed a contract with Saab for the development and demonstration of a new unmanned underwater system – Large Uncrewed Undersea Vehicle (LUUV). The vehicle will independently monitor, detect, and counter threats in underwater environments and support the Swedish Armed Forces' naval capabilities.

– The system provides the Swedish Armed Forces with an increased ability to monitor, detect, and counter threats and is very timely considering today's global situation, says Jesper Fahlén, section chief at FMV, in the agency's press release.

LUUV can be described as an autonomous mini-submarine without a crew. It will be platform-independent and capable of being carried by ships or vehicles. Saab is responsible for design, construction, and testing. The order value amounts to 60 million kronor. The project begins immediately, and the first sea trials are planned for the summer of 2026.

– It is gratifying that together with FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces, we have the opportunity to work quickly and coordinated to develop a new advanced system in a short time, says Mats Wicksell, head of business area at Saab Kockums, in a press release from Saab.

The vehicle is being developed through accelerated procurement, according to Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M).

– A new unmanned mini-submarine is being developed through accelerated procurement to quickly strengthen our naval capability. This is very positive, writes he on X.

The Swedish Armed Forces see the development as an important step to improve the protection of civilian and military infrastructure underwater.

– With underwater drones, we are taking another quick leap that enhances Sweden's and our allies' ability to maintain security in strategically important maritime areas, says Tobias Söderblom, head of development at the Naval Warfare School, in a statement on the Swedish Armed Forces' website.

Initially, LUUV will function as a sensor platform for situational awareness and decision support. The system is not currently armed, but according to the defense minister, there is potential in the future to arm the vehicle with mines and torpedoes.
