The additional order includes the development of new development and simulation environments for the JAS 39 C/D, as well as the creation of new support systems to facilitate the Swedish Armed Forces' harmonisation of the JAS 39 C/D and JAS 39 E. The order also includes a supplementary order of equipment and hardware, according to statements from the agency and the company.
– The upgrade of the Gripen C/D is an important step to maintain a high operational capability in the turbulent world we live in. It is also significant for keeping the Gripen C/D operational beyond 2030, says Lars Tossman, head of Saab's Aeronautics business area, in Saab's press release.
In recent months, FMV has made various orders to enhance the capability and extend the lifespan of Sweden's C/D aircraft. Earlier in October, the agency entered into an agreement with GKN Aerospace for the development and improvement of the RM12, the engine for the Swedish fighter aircraft JAS 39 Gripen C/D.
In September, FMV entered into a multi-billion agreement with Saab regarding new functionality and changed delivery plans for the Gripen E and Gripen C/D. The new functionality includes changes in the electronic warfare system, communication system, and reconnaissance system, as well as altered delivery plans for both the Gripen E and Gripen C/D.
The effect of this agreement means that the Swedish Armed Forces can continue to use the Gripen C/D after 2030 and in parallel with the E system. In an article on the Swedish Armed Forces' website, in connection with the agreement, Air Force Chief Jonas Wikman states:
– With the deteriorating global situation, we need to keep up and be at the forefront of technology to meet future threats. This agreement means that we can continue to operate with both systems and maintain a strong fighter capability over time.
Earlier in October, FMV received the first series-produced Gripen E aircraft from Saab. In an interview with FMV, Lars Helmrich, head of FMV's Air and Space Material division, states that the plan is for FMV to deliver the JAS 39E to the Air Force from 2025 onwards.
Regarding today's news, Magnus Wallén, project manager for the JAS39 C/D block update at FMV, says in the agency's press release that the order is important in several dimensions.
– The JAS39 C/D is currently the backbone of the Swedish air defence. This order to Saab is one of several steps to maintain the high operational capability of the system beyond 2030, even for our export customers. This is of significant importance, especially in the changing world we live in today.
