MSHORAD stands for Mobile Short-Range Air Defence. The system consists of a mobile radar unit based on Saab's radar Giraffe 1X and a mobile firing unit based on Saab's missile system RBS 70 NG. The units are connected with Saab's command and control system for ground-based air defense, GBAD C2. The air defense system is used to quickly and effectively identify, counter, and neutralize aerial threats, writes Saab.
- I am proud that Sweden chooses Saab's solution for this purpose. We offer an advanced mobile system that protects troops on the battlefield, says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab's business area Dynamics, in the company's press release.
Both systems are integrated on the Bandvagn 410, or internationally called BvS10 from Hägglunds, which allows for both shrapnel protection and high mobility. One system, called LvNorr, will act as the sensor unit for Firing Unit 98, which uses missile 98 internationally known as IRIS-T. The other system, called MSHORAD, will act as a sensor for a new missile vehicle with a three-shot launcher for Missile System 70D, Saab RBS 70 NG, also mounted on the Bv 410, according to the authority.
– Missile 70 is a well-proven air defense system in the Armed Forces. The purpose of the acquisition is to explore the possibilities of increasing the system's mobility and thereby improving protection against aerial threats by integrating missile 70 and sensor units on the tracked vehicle, says Christer Mellgren, project manager at FMV, in the authority's press release.
