– This is an important step to clarify technology choices and commercial action options ahead of decisions on how future combat aircraft capabilities will be supplied with materials. Considering the long development times and the decisions that need to be made, it is good that the work is starting now. It is also natural for the aviation industry to participate with its knowledge at this stage, says Lars Helmrich, Head of the Aviation and Space Division at FMV in the agency's press release.
The concept studies include both manned and unmanned solutions within the system-of-systems, technology development, and demonstrators. Saab will collaborate with FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, GKN Aerospace, and other industry partners to carry out the work, writes Saab.
- Saab is in a strong position. We have recently developed the Gripen E and GlobalEye and have the advanced technology and expertise required to move forward with the concept for future combat aircraft. This means that we will continue to deliver innovative solutions to meet the future operational needs of the Armed Forces and other customers, says Lars Tossman, Head of Saab's Aeronautics business area in the company's press release.
For GKN Aerospace, FMV's order involves conducting concept studies for advanced propulsion systems. According to GKN, the contract includes broad concept studies, technology development, and preparatory demonstrations of innovative solutions for propulsion systems.
In addition to these studies, GKN has entered into a new cooperation agreement with Saab to strengthen the partnership for the development of innovative solutions in various areas, including the next-generation combat aircraft systems. As part of the collaboration, GKN Aerospace is also opening a new office in Linköping.
This contract will enable us to further strengthen our capability and support our customers with the necessary data for future combat aircraft capabilities, says Stefan Oscarsson, Vice President Governmental Solutions at GKN Aerospace in the company's press release.
