FMV in Billion-Deal with Thales for Special Long-Range Radar
FMV has entered into a billion-deal with Thales for the delivery of long-range radar to Sweden, which will enhance the country's air surveillance capabilities. The SMART-L system will be delivered from 2025 and contribute to Sweden's air and missile defense.
Special long-range radar is used to cover a large area. The large coverage volume allows the system to contribute to the air situation picture. The system, called SMART – L, is ground-based and can also track ballistic missiles and contribute to the space situation picture, the agency writes. The system will contribute to a significant capability increase in Swedish air surveillance and expanded capacity for detecting ballistic missiles and space surveillance, Thales states in its press release. According to the company, the system has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers.
- It is a new type of radar system that we have not had in Sweden before, which gives the Swedish Armed Forces new and expanded capability. Tracking ballistic missiles is a new, long-awaited capability that now becomes part of the Swedish integrated air and missile defense. The ballistic missile function will also contribute to sending data to the Patriot system to enhance its ability to combat such threats, says Mattias Alfredsson, project manager for New Sensor Systems, FMV to the agency.
The value of the newly signed agreement is approximately one billion kronor. Delivery of the first system to FMV will occur in 2025, with planned delivery to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2026. Thereafter, there will be ongoing deliveries to the Swedish Armed Forces until 2028, the agency writes.
According to Thales' press release, the naval and land-based versions of SMART-L are operational in, among others, the Dutch Navy and Air Force. FMV writes that there is already a joint declaration of intent between Sweden and the Netherlands, a so-called Letter of Intent, for deepened cooperation in the area of special long-range radar. This involves, among other things, information exchange and exploring possibilities to harmonize technical requirements and contract terms for future procurements, possibilities to harmonize maintenance agreements and system development, and possibilities to coordinate and optimize industrial cooperation.
- The idea is that we should be able to cooperate with the Netherlands in this area to gain advantages in, among other things, the operational maintenance phase and when upgrading the system, says Mattias Alfredsson in FMV's press release.
The defense industry site Janes contacted a representative from Thales who did not want to comment on how many units of the system FMV has ordered.
