Svenska Verkan AB has been commissioned by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to carry out a study on domestic propellant manufacturing. The study will examine how the company's planned facility in Björneborg, Kristinehamn Municipality (central Sweden), could strengthen the security of ammunition supply in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic region.

According to a press release from Verkan, the study will also examine how the facility can ensure a consistent supply of propellant of even quality for ammunition in demand among the Nordic armed forces.

"The goal is clear: to give Sweden control over one of defence's most critical input materials, all the way from Swedish raw material to finished propellant," says Hugo Carlsson, CEO of Verkan, in the press release.

Verkan plans to manufacture nitrocellulose and propellant using Swedish timber raw material as its starting point. The FMV commission concerns a study of the planned manufacturing process. The press release does not indicate any decision to establish the facility or begin production.
