The order pertains to the Torpedo 47 system, which is the Swedish Armed Forces' designation for Saab's lightweight torpedo. This is the second order of the torpedo, with the first deliveries having started in 2022. The torpedo is designed for use from submarines and surface vessels, and is also prepared for integration on helicopters.
According to FMV, the system is developed to operate in shallow waters and complex topography, with a particular focus on navigation and target-seeking capabilities. The order also includes torpedo tubes.
– Our mission is to deliver the right equipment to the Swedish Armed Forces, at the right time and with the right quality, says Roger Lundkvist, head of underwater combat systems at FMV.
Saab states that the order includes torpedoes, spare parts, training systems, and technical support.
– The state-of-the-art system provides enhanced capabilities, says Mats Wicksell, head of the Kockums business area at Saab.
