The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed an agreement with Saab for the delivery of the Sea Giraffe 1X radar system to the Swedish Armed Forces. The order, valued at approximately 340 million SEK, includes radar in various configurations for both training and installation on ships. Deliveries will take place continuously between 2024 and 2026, according to press releases from Saab and FMV.

The Sea Giraffe 1X radar system is a maritime radar capable of simultaneously conducting air surveillance, surface surveillance, and drone detection. According to Saab, the software-based design is adapted for use on both smaller and larger vessels, including autonomous crafts.

– The maritime radar will help strengthen the navy's ability to detect, track, and assess threats from the air and on the surface, says Fredrik Lindén, Head of Naval Materiel at FMV.

Saab also views the order as an important part of strengthening the Swedish navy's capacity.

– The Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute to protecting coastal areas and strengthening the navy's units at sea with advanced capabilities to detect, track, and classify threats from the air and on the surface, says Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab's business area Surveillance.
