FMV, on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces, has ordered more targeting pods and maintenance capabilities from Saab, with an order value of 390 million SEK. The pods are of the Laser Designator Pod (LDP) LITENING 5 type and are to be delivered to FMV in 2026, according to press releases from Saab and FMV.

– With this order to Saab, the operational capability within JAS39 is increased. This is of significant importance, especially in the changing and uncertain world we live in today, says Magnus Wallén, project manager at FMV in the agency's press release.

The LDP is a targeting pod used for precision engagement of targets through laser designation and target tracking. FMV has previously ordered the same version of the pod for the Gripen E, and it has now also been integrated on the Gripen C/D. The supplementary acquisition includes more pods, maintenance, and spare parts and aims to strengthen the national capability within JAS39 C/D and E.

– By Saab building up a maintenance capability for this version of targeting pods, we ensure that the Swedish Armed Forces can maintain these within Sweden's borders, which is important in the world we live in, says Lars Tossman, head of Saab's Aeronautics business area in the company's press release.
