The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with GKN Aerospace for the development and improvement of the RM12, the engine powering the Swedish combat aircraft JAS 39 Gripen C/D. The upgraded engine will be implemented gradually in collaboration with FMV and Saab, according to a press release from GKN dated 3 October.

FMV's order for engine development and improvement is the final part of a development project that GKN Aerospace has been conducting since 2019. The order value for this contract is 23.6 million Swedish kronor, according to the company.

In addition to new functionality, the improvements will also contribute to lower lifecycle costs over time for the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten). The project also provides strong conditions for enhanced engine capability in Sweden ahead of the ongoing establishment of product support for the RM16, the engine in the JAS 39 Gripen E/F. Testing of the upgraded engine will take place primarily at GKN Aerospace in Trollhättan (western Sweden), while flight testing will also be conducted at Saab and FMV, GKN states.

"This order means that we at GKN Aerospace continue to strengthen our expertise and capability to manage complex full engine systems for combat aircraft over time. We are enormously proud to contribute to strengthening Swedish defence," says Stefan Oscarsson, Vice President of GKN Aerospace Sweden AB, in the press release.
