This week, a delegation from the New York National Guard arrived in Sweden to formally commence a new collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces under the United States' security cooperation programme, the State Partnership Program (SPP). The partnership aims to enhance the respective countries' military capabilities through joint exercises and knowledge exchange. This is announced by the Swedish Armed Forces on their website.

The visit marks a continuation of the agreement signed this summer, and during the stay, the delegation will gain insight into the organisation and operations of the Swedish Armed Forces as well as demonstrate capabilities within the army, navy, and air force.

– The relationship with the New York National Guard is an important part of the cooperation between Sweden and the USA. It will strengthen both capability development and exercise opportunities and contribute to the long-term nature of our relations, says Johan Pekkari, head of the Swedish Armed Forces' strategy unit.

The New York National Guard possesses capabilities that are of great significance to Sweden, including the capacity to organise and lead larger military units. The Swedish Armed Forces, in turn, can contribute expertise in areas such as arctic warfare, combat aviation, and infrastructure defence.

The cooperation is expected to strengthen both capability development and exercise opportunities, which are crucial for developing interoperability and ensuring a long-term relationship.
