Skaraborg Air Wing F 7 (western Sweden) has received the first example of the JAS 39 Gripen E. The system will be introduced in parallel with the current C/D versions and represents a technological leap in Swedish combat aviation.
According to the Swedish Armed Forces, the delivery marks a milestone for the Air Force. The aircraft carries a heavier payload and is adapted to operate in threat environments where Sweden lacks air superiority.
"This marks an important milestone in the development of Swedish defence. It is the result of long-term cooperation and close collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and Swedish industry," says Supreme Commander Michael Claesson in the press release.
The Gripen E has been equipped with new sensors, radar, and communications systems. At the same time, it retains several characteristics from the C/D versions, including its flight handling qualities, which means pilots will find the cockpit environment familiar. According to the Swedish Armed Forces, however, the E version requires a new capability to manage and interpret significantly more information.
"It is an entirely new system, built to meet future requirements for survivability, range, sensors, and interoperability," says Wing Commander Mattias Ottis.
The introduction of the Gripen E is taking place in parallel with the continued operation of the C/D versions. The systems will be used simultaneously for several years, representing a new model for the Air Force, which previously replaced entire fleets at once.
"This is the beginning of capability development," says Air Force Chief Jonas Wikman.
