A new strategy is set to guide the Finnish Defence Forces (Puolustusvoimat) towards a more data-focused approach and strengthen the use of AI. The strategy outlines goals for leadership, information exchange, and automation, among other areas.

According to a press release from the Finnish Defence Forces, data and AI are central components in future warfare, where the information environment complements traditional domains such as land, sea, and air. The strategy identifies the goals for a data-focused operation and how AI will be used to manage large data volumes from sources like sensors and satellites.

– A modern battlefield extends beyond land, sea, and air to cyberspace, space, and the information environment. […] Data is no longer just a tool but also a central resource, says Major General Sami Nurmi, Chief of Strategy at the Finnish Defence Forces, in the press release.

The strategy highlights six goals: data-focused leadership, secure information management, effective information exchange internally and with allies, creation of situational awareness, automation of routine tasks, and unified information management throughout the entire lifecycle.

– The Defence Forces keep pace with the times and continuously evolve to respond to changes in the operational environment and warfare. […] Our new data and AI strategy guides this development, says Major General Nurmi.
