The Finnish Defence Forces (Puolustusvoimat) are developing their AI capabilities in collaboration with NestAI and are preparing a new AI centre set to commence operations in 2026, according to a press release from the Finnish Defence Forces. The centre will gather expertise and drive the development of AI solutions for military applications.
The collaboration is part of the new data and AI strategy launched this year. According to the strategy, the Finnish Defence Forces aim to transition towards data-focused and knowledge-based leadership, with the goal of enhancing decision-making, operational capability, and technological development across the entire organisation.
“We should also strive to be pioneers in this area within our main task – military defence,” says General Janne Jaakkola, Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, in the press release.
The Finnish Defence Forces are also testing a new co-development model where the agency closely collaborates with companies, including rapidly translating operational needs into technical solutions.
The collaboration with NestAI, which began in 2025, has already accelerated AI development according to the agency. The company operates in areas such as unmanned systems and command and control systems, and is part of Peter Sarlin's technology company PostScriptum.
“Finland's and Europe's competitiveness in the AI market is crucial for ensuring our security. [...] Our collaboration with the Finnish Defence Forces has already gained momentum, and we are pleased to see how even a large organisation can quickly adapt to necessary changes,” says Peter Sarlin, Chairman of PostScriptum.
