The Finnish Defence Forces have decided to introduce NATO-standardised calibres in their new small arms. The transition will begin as older weapons are replaced.

According to a press release from the Finnish Defence Forces, new small arms will use the calibres 5.56x45 mm, 7.62x51 mm, 9x19 mm, and 12.7x99 mm. The decision aims to improve capability, maintenance, and interoperability with other NATO countries. Current calibres will continue to be used but will no longer be newly procured.

The decision allows for the continued procurement of new automatic rifles, sniper rifles, and machine guns during the 2030s.

– In the choice of calibre, many factors have been reviewed and considered, including performance capability, soldier's load, maintenance security, and ammunition availability, says Brigadier General Sami-Antti Takamaa at the Army Staff in the press release.

According to the Defence Forces, the new calibre for automatic rifles (5.56x45 mm) offers improved accuracy and lower weight, reducing the burden on the soldier. At longer shooting distances, troop-specific weapons with larger calibres such as 7.62x51 mm and 12.7x99 mm are used.
