Finland is strengthening its air defence through a new order for the RBS 70 NG ground-based air defence missile system from Swedish defence company Saab. Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen has authorised the Finnish Defence Forces (Puolustusvoimat) to procure the system from Saab in a deal worth 108 million euros.

According to a press release from the Finnish Ministry of Defence (Puolustusministeriö), the procurement will strengthen regional air defence coverage across the country. The RBS 70 NG is a further development of the system already in service with the Finnish Defence Forces and features enhanced capabilities against both drones and manned aircraft.

"We are developing Finland's air defence systems on a broad front. Preparedness against various threats must include the right and up-to-date equipment for every need. This procurement is part of a comprehensive whole," said Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen in the press release.

The acquisition includes new firing units, training equipment, and a maintenance system. The Salpausselkä Air Defence Section of the Karelian Brigade will be the primary unit responsible for training personnel and conscripts.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the new capability is expected to be fully operational before 2030.
