- The fact that we now have our own doctoral programme with a military history focus contributes to the development of an already strong research environment. It represents a significant step towards strengthening the area of defence, crisis management, and security with military historical research, says Steve Murdoch, Professor of Military History at the Department of War Studies and Military History.
The subject of military history studies, among other things, war, military institutions, culture, and thought. It is part of the history subject but can be seen as its own sub-discipline due to its strong focus. A military historian can analyse the consequences of war on civilian society and the interaction between military and civilian in a long historical perspective, for example, through the study of society's resource generation for military purposes in economic, personnel, and ideological terms, according to the university's press release.
- Through collaboration, we create an interface between military history and the broader history subject while ensuring a critical mass for our doctoral candidates in terms of doctoral seminars and networks. This helps to broaden the military historical research environment while providing new and important perspectives that strengthen the Swedish Defence University's area, says Piotr Wawrzeniuk, Director of Studies for the doctoral programme in military history.
