According to information from Expressen, the couple arrested in the Stockholm area on 17 October have long-standing careers in government service. The man is reported to have worked for a long time in the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten), both in Sweden and abroad. The man's wife is also said to hold a sensitive position at a Swedish authority, according to the newspaper.

The couple were arrested and detained on Tuesday morning in the Stockholm area following an operation by the Swedish Security Service (Säkerhetspolisen). The case is being handled by the Swedish Security Service under the direction of prosecutors from the National Security Unit. The preliminary investigation is led by prosecutors Per Lindqvist and Mats Ljungqvist, who are the same prosecutors that handled the case of the convicted spy brothers Peyman and Payam Kia.

According to Expressen, the man is "well acquainted with both the Russian and Ukrainian military systems" and has also had connections to the Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must), with several important positions both in Sweden and abroad. The man's wife is reported to hold an extremely sensitive position at an authority, a source told the newspaper. Currently, the man works at a different authority than the Swedish Armed Forces.

Certain ministers, such as Defence Minister Pål Jonsson and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, as well as the highest defence leadership, are said to have been informed about the case.

Investigators from the Swedish Security Service are reported to have made a large number of seizures both at the couple's residence in Stockholm and at at least one additional address, according to Expressen. In addition, seizures were also made in the couple's basement storage. According to the article, it is not known whether any specific findings were made in the seizures that strengthen the suspicions of the crime.
