On 26 April, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, visited MSB Sandö. During the visit, a press conference was held where the ministers announced that the government will assign a special investigator to analyse and propose a system for personnel supply that includes general service duty and civil duty. This is stated in a press release from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).

Currently, there is a so-called fast track to further train approximately 2,500 people within municipal rescue services for wartime rescue operations. The government is commissioning the investigation to analyse and propose how the personnel needs within civil defence can be secured. The ministers clarify that the investigation does not affect individuals covered by the fast track, which MSB reports they are working to implement from autumn 2024.

– The purpose is for the investigator to propose a long-term sustainable personnel supply for civil defence, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

– The investigator is also to analyse the conditions for ensuring the personnel needs of civil defence during heightened readiness through general service duty and civil duty, says Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

– The decision is a step in the right direction in the continued work of developing and building Sweden's civil defence and is an important contribution to a stronger total defence, says Cecilia Looström, MSB's Head of Department for Rescue Services and Accident Prevention.
