In paid collaboration with Expando: At DALO, Expando is located at booth BSA-129 to meet new and existing customers and highlight its role as a problem solver at the intersection of COTS and customer-specific customization. Recently, the company delivered a telemetry computer in a small form factor with high I/O density, FPGA support, and USB 3.0 despite requirements for MIL connectors.

Expando delivers its solutions to leading defense companies and bases its approach on customer needs with an established delivery process. The company has over 25 years of experience in defense and space and works closely with European manufacturers to combine performance, cost, and delivery time in every project.

The guiding principles are trust, expertise, and simplicity.

– We start with the customer's needs and adapt from there. Often, customers want to take advantage of COTS while still meeting military requirements, which necessitates modifications. That's exactly where we come in. We are ready to customize and deliver on time. Bring us your toughest technical challenges, says Henrik Plym-Forshell, VP Sales & Marketing at Expando.

A leading defense customer needed a robust "Mission-Computer" with many I/O interfaces, USB 3.0, and FPGA integration within a very limited space. Expando chose a COM Express-based COTS solution and modified it based on requirements for function, temperature, and shock and vibration. To ensure USB 3.0 performance, which is challenging through circular MIL connectors, two built-in USB 3.0 connections were integrated into the unit itself. The result was a small, robust, configurable, EU-manufactured telemetry computer with an Intel Core™ i7 processor, high I/O density, and an FPGA.

– The challenge was not only to fit everything into a small enclosure but to combine performance, robustness, and flexibility when standard solutions are not enough. Through modified COTS, we were able to meet the requirements without compromising USB 3.0 speed or system durability, says Henrik Plym-Forshell.

In addition to embedded computers, Expando can take full responsibility as a system integrator, including integration into cabinets, racks, and consoles. At booth BSA-129 at DALO, the team is on-site to discuss upcoming needs and how modified COTS can shorten the path from requirements to operational capability in today's security environment.
