Denmark Reorganises Defence
Denmark is reorganising its defence to increase effectiveness and improve operational capability, with a new structure that includes a Finance and Operations Staff as well as an 'Operational Support Command'.
The Chief of Defence in Denmark has presented a new organisational structure for the Danish Defence. The aim is to increase decisiveness, speed up decision-making processes, and create better conditions for building operational capability.
In a press release from Forsvarskommandoen (Defence Command Denmark), it is stated that the new structure is a response to the changed security policy situation. General Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard, Denmark's Chief of Defence, emphasises the need for a defence that can act swiftly in the present while simultaneously building long-term capability.
– We need a defence with increased striking power and decisiveness, so that we can act quickly here and now, but also in the long term, says General Hyldgaard in the press release.
The reorganisation includes the transfer of Personelkommandoen (Personnel Command) and Etablissement- og Terrænkommandoen (Establishment and Terrain Command) to Forsvarskommandoen. Additionally, a new Economic and Operations Staff is being established to strengthen the Chief of Defence's overall responsibility by linking financial management to long-term planning.
At the same time, a new unit is being established: Operativ Støttekommando (Operational Support Command, OSK). It will have a consolidated responsibility for operational logistics and support within the Danish Defence and will be organised as an independent level II command structure under Forsvarskommandoen. OSK initially consists of the Defence Medical Command, Maintenance Service, Joint Movement and Transportation Organization, and parts of the Supply Chain Division. The command form is initially provisional, based in Brabrand, and is expected to be fully established by early 2026.
In the organisational chart from the Danish Defence, it is shown that OSK is placed alongside other defence branch commands, including the Army Command, Naval Command, and Air Command.
Further analyses are ongoing regarding local IT support, HR models, communication, and the distribution of responsibilities between the levels in the organisation. These are expected to be completed during 2025 and into 2026.
