Denmark expands its existing order of Combat Vehicle 90 with an additional 44 vehicles. The contract is part of the Nordic cooperation on joint procurements and means that the Danish Army will have a total of 159 vehicles of the model CV9035 MkIIIC available before 2030.
– Another show of strength for the Swedish defence industry. It makes both Sweden and Denmark safer, writes Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on X/Twitter.
According to the Danish procurement authority FMI (Forsvarets Materieltjeneste), the new vehicles replace an older fleet that was previously planned to be upgraded. By opting for new acquisitions instead of updates, Denmark avoids being without capacity for an extended period. The delivery is an addition to the contract signed in 2024 together with Sweden and now includes a total of 159 vehicles for Denmark.
– The acquisition is a result of the close and good cooperation we have with Sweden, says Denmark's Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen in FMI's press release.
The new vehicles are of the same model already ordered by Sweden and are built to the same standard as in the Dutch modernisation programme. The deal is valued at approximately 450 million dollars and also includes spare parts, logistics, and training.
– The order demonstrates the confidence in the CV90 system and our commitment to meeting Denmark's needs with modern solutions, says Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, CEO of BAE Systems Hägglunds.
According to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), a Swedish approval was first required for the additional order, as Denmark is part of the joint framework agreement with Sweden. FMV has now approved the change.
– Denmark's additional order demonstrates the strength of this cooperation and the possibilities when we make joint procurements. It is also good for the overall defence capability in the Nordics, says Jonas Lotsne, Head of Army Materiel at FMV.
The new combat vehicles are delivered with several technical improvements compared to the previous Danish fleet, including a new turret, rubber tracks for better mobility, integrated anti-tank missiles, and an active protection system. Deliveries to Denmark are planned to occur gradually during the period 2027-2030.
The Danish order is part of the framework agreement initiated in December 2024, when Sweden and Denmark signed a contract for joint procurement of CV90 for both their own needs and for Ukraine.
In parallel with the Danish-Swedish procurement of CV9035 MkIIIC, a multilateral project is also underway to develop the next generation of combat vehicles, CV90 Mk IV. This collaboration includes Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Norway.
