The Danish Army introduces new modern 120 mm ammunition for the heavy mortar system CARDOM10. The purchase enables the use of explosive, illumination, and smoke grenades, which is said to increase the flexibility and effectiveness of mobile units according to a press release from the Danish Defence Materiel and Procurement Agency (FMI).

Previously, the army utilised the older explosive grenade M/50. The new ammunition, introduced via an existing framework agreement, features an aerodynamic design that is said to provide both longer range and easier handling compared to its predecessor. The system is integrated on the Piranha 5 platform and forms a central part of the 1st Brigade's fire support, according to FMI.

– The new ammunition provides the army's units with increased effectiveness on the battlefield. It is an important step in the modernisation of the army's firepower, says Major Jesper Lindholm, acting head of the 1st Artillery Division at the Danish Artillery Regiment.

The ammunition was operationally validated during live-fire exercises in December 2025 and will continue to be used from March onwards.

In addition to the purchase, domestic production is also being prepared. The ammunition factory in Elling is expected to be completed by 2027 to deliver modern 120 mm explosive ammunition. According to FMI, the investment is crucial for securing national supply capacity and taking advantage of technological advancements in the field.
