Denmark has decided to build its future medium-range ground-based air defence with three European systems: NASAMS from Norway, IRIS-T from Germany, and VL MICA from France. The decision has been made by several parties (forsvarsforligskredsen) following a recommendation from Denmark's Chief of Defence.

– Ground-based air defence is an absolute top priority in the development of the Defence. This is a major and important step for Denmark's security, says Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in a press release from the country's Ministry of Defence.

The decision is part of a larger initiative announced in September 2025, where Denmark is investing in a total of eight medium- and long-range systems. For long-range defence, Denmark has chosen SAMP/T, a French-Italian developed air defence system.

Experiences from the war in Ukraine have been crucial in the decision-making process.

– The war has shown how crucial air defence is to protect the civilian population from air attacks, says the Defence Minister.

Each system consists of several fire units that can independently locate and engage air targets. The systems include radar, command centre, missile launchers, and missiles. The goal is to create a geographically comprehensive air defence across the entire country.

The first system is expected to be operational by the turn of the year, with more to follow progressively over the coming years.
