Denmark chooses European air defence system

Denmark has chosen the European air defence system SAMP/T NG, developed by Thales and MBDA, and thereby becomes the third country after France and Italy to join. Deliveries are planned to commence in 2028 and the system will be equipped with the Ground Fire 300 radar system.

Denmark chooses European air defence system

Denmark has selected the next-generation air defence system SAMP/T NG, a further development of the earlier SAMP/T, as part of the build-up of a ground-based air defence capability. Deliveries are planned to begin in 2028, according to Thales in a press release.

According to Thales, the Danish version of SAMP/T NG will be equipped with the Ground Fire 300 radar, as well as a new command and fire control system developed in cooperation with MBDA.

Denmark thus becomes the third country, after France and Italy, to join the NG version, and is the first export customer. Delivery of system components is planned to begin in 2028, according to Thales.

In September 2025, NDS reported that Denmark had decided to make a substantial investment in air defence, valued at 58 billion Danish kroner. That investment included the selection of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T for long-range air defence.

"SAMP/T NG is the most advanced mobile ground-based air defence system, designed to protect Danish airspace and contribute to the defence of European countries and NATO," said Hervé Dammann, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Land and Air Systems at Thales, in the press release.

The system is developed within the framework of the cooperation between Thales and MBDA through the joint venture Eurosam.

The programme is overseen by the European armaments cooperation organisation Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).

In November 2025, the Danish Ministry of Defence announced that the country had selected several European systems for medium-range air defence. The decision formed part of the broader investment announced in September 2025, in which Denmark is investing in a total of eight systems with medium and long range.
