Denmark’s Home Guard has received its first eight new Mercedes-Benz G-Class terrain vehicles. The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (FMI) announced the delivery on 8 October.
— It’s a big upgrade from the older models, says Colonel Thomas Øgendahl Knudsen, head of FMI’s land division.
The Home Guard variant has a roof mount for a light machine gun. It will equip the Home Guard’s motorised surveillance units (MOTOV) across the country. Home Guard volunteers helped develop and test the vehicle. They assessed its cargo capacity, comfort and off-road performance.
— It’s a positive development that we now have a vehicle adapted to our needs on the modern battlefield, says Sergeant Martin, a MOTOV group leader.
— It gives us better conditions to carry out our task today, but also secures us as a strong capability for many years ahead, he added.
The vehicles will replace the Danish armed forces’ Geländewagen fleet, which has been in service since 1985.
FMI signed a contract for about 1,000 vehicles with Danish Mercedes-Benz dealer Ejner Hessel in June 2025. It has not said how many will go to the Home Guard. The first 29 vehicles were delivered in June to the Estate and Terrain Command (ETK). FMI plans 200–300 deliveries a year until the end of 2029.
