The Danish Air Force Home Guard (Flyverhjemmeværnet) will use drones in its annual exercise for the first time. The exercise runs from 6 to 8 November at Finderup Training Area near Viborg.

Four newly trained drone pilots from the unit will fly during the exercise. They are among 16 volunteers who completed the Home Guard School’s new basic drone course in August, after the Home Guard launched the pilot training, as reported by NDS.

According to the Home Guard, about 200 volunteer soldiers have signed up. Units from guarding to Security Force will train together.

The exercise will test how drones can support platoon and section leaders. Drone technology is changing quickly, said an education officer with the Air Force Home Guard.

— That’s why we’re using the exercise to test what makes the most sense, he said.

Soldiers will also learn how drones affect their ability to stay hidden.

— How does a platoon conceal itself? How does it become less visible to thermal sensors and cameras? the officer said.
