In paid collaboration with Ideon Science Park: On 29 April, companies, authorities, and researchers will gather at Defence Day in Lund (southern Sweden) – with the goal of accelerating Swedish defence innovation. The initiative is backed by Ideon Science Park, which argues that Sweden lacks the structures needed for technology to be rapidly scaled and implemented.
Sweden today possesses technology, expertise, and companies with solutions that can contribute to strengthening defence capabilities. However, the path from idea to practical application is often unclear, especially for actors outside the traditional defence industry.
– We have world-leading research in areas such as AI, quantum technology, and cybersecurity. We have startups building advanced decision support systems, sensors, and drone solutions. But too few of these reach test beds, pilots, or procurement, says Johan Vaernholt, business development manager at Ideon Science Park and former professional officer.
For the past two years, Ideon has been running an initiative to connect industry, academia, and defence, with the goal of creating long-term structures for collaboration. The focus is on dual-use solutions, test environments, accelerator programs, and faster verification of technology with potential.
– Other countries are moving faster. We see a need to increase the pace, to create a neutral, functioning environment where new solutions meet actual needs, says Vaernholt.
According to him, NATO membership also opens new doors: requirements for interoperability, but also opportunities for international collaborations and exports.
Defence Day in Lund gathers actors
On 29 April, Defence Day will be held at Ideon in Lund, a forum where companies, investors, authorities, and researchers are invited to discuss how Swedish innovation can more quickly benefit the defence sector.
– We know that both small tech companies and large industries want to contribute. Now it is about creating structures that make it possible, says Johan Vaernholt.
Among the speakers is Erik Melin from Saab Group, who will share Saab's perspective on defence innovation.
