Billion Upgrade of Defense's Tanks
FMV has signed a contract with German KMW to upgrade the Armed Forces' tanks. 44 tanks will be renovated and modified at a cost of 3.5 billion kronor and will subsequently receive a new designation: Tank 123A. Deliveries to the Armed Forces will begin in 2026, FMV states in a press release.

– Tanks will be the backbone of the army's brigades for a long time to come, this is a conclusion we can draw from the ongoing war in Ukraine. The order we are now placing with KMW entails a significant modernization of our tank fleet and extends the tanks' lifespan at least into the 2030s, says Jonas Lotsne, head of FMV's army materiel division in the press release.

The agency writes that this is the beginning of the most extensive upgrade of Tank 122 since the tanks were acquired in the early 2000s:

The upgrade includes, among other things, the replacement of virtually all electronic components in the tank so that the system aligns with other modern Leopard 2s, a new L55 caliber cannon with greater capability to program ammunition, new night sights for the gunner and tank commander, as well as a night driving camera for the driver, and finally a new track system, including tracks.
