In Finland, conscription is mandatory for men, while women can voluntarily apply for military service. Following the conclusion of the application period for women on 15 January, the country's Defence Forces have presented this year's figures. A total of 1,360 women applied for voluntary military service.
The voluntary military service for women has existed for over 30 years and is an established part of the Finnish defence. During this time, approximately 14,800 women have been trained for the reserve at the Defence Forces' and Border Guard's units.
– The voluntary military service for women is an important part of the defence. After completing military service, skills are further developed through refresher exercises. Military service also provides good opportunities to pursue crisis management assignments and various roles within the Defence Forces, says the Army's Chief of Staff, Major General Jukka Jokinen.
The figures are in line with the previous year, when approximately 1,400 applications were registered.
Selection events for the applicants are organised in April. At that time, the Defence Forces' regional offices call the women who have applied for selection, where interviews are conducted, information about the service is provided, and health examinations are carried out. The applicants also have the opportunity to express preferences regarding, for example, service tasks. Women aged 18-29 have the opportunity to apply for voluntary military service.
