The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, has ordered Bittium Tough SDR radios for testing and pilot use by the Swedish Army. Finnish company Bittium announced the order on 9 September 2026.
The order is worth approximately EUR 740,000. It is the first procurement made under the framework agreement Bittium signed with the Finnish and Swedish Defence Forces in November 2025. This agreement covers joint procurement of Bittium's tactical communications systems and software-defined radios within a shared C4I framework. It runs for ten years, and other Nordic countries can join it through the Nordic defence cooperation arrangement.
The Tough SDR family gives mobile troops data, voice and video connectivity, from vehicles down to dismounted soldiers and unmanned platforms. The radios are software-defined and support multiple waveforms, including the NATO-standardised ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform. According to Bittium, the radios are designed to keep working in demanding electronic warfare conditions. The Finnish Defence Forces already use the technology.
Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President of Bittium's Defence & Security business segment, welcomed FMV's choice of the Tough SDR radios for the Swedish Army pilot, calling it "an important step towards interoperability in Nordic command-and-control systems and tactical communications." He added that "defence cooperation between the Nordic NATO countries has real strategic significance in safeguarding the defence of the North", and that "[Bittium] look[s] forward to supporting Sweden’s pilot and further developing our cooperation".
