According to a press release from the government, the decision includes up to 25 people, of which the Swedish Armed Forces state that the trauma unit in question initially comprises "approximately ten people" and that the operation is expected to start in mid-June.
The agency further states that the trauma unit consists, among others, of several surgeons and anaesthesia personnel. Onboard HNLMS Karel Doorman, there are also operating rooms, intensive care units, and various emergency rooms, as well as a helicopter to evacuate injured personnel to hospitals.
– For Sweden, international trade and free shipping are important, and that is why the government has decided to increase Sweden's contribution to Operation Aspides. The Swedish Armed Forces are sending a trauma unit with surgeons and anaesthesia personnel to the Red Sea, which is a requested contribution, says Defence Minister Pål Jonson, in the government's press release.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence announced earlier in April that HNLMS Karel Doorman will set sail for the Red Sea in early May and return by mid-August. The ship will also make its capabilities available to the units participating in the US-led operation Prosperity Guardian, the ministry continues.
– By contributing with HNLMS Karel Doorman, we further contribute to the protection of international law and a trade route of international significance, writes Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren on X (formerly Twitter).
