Sweden will support Denmark with military counter-drone capability in connection with this week's summits in Copenhagen. The government made the decision on Friday following a formal request from the Danish side.
– Specifically, it involves a unit contribution with counter-drone capability, known as Counter UAS. The unit will be led by the Danish Armed Forces and contribute to their support of the Danish police, wrote Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on X/Twitter.
The background is a series of drone incidents in Denmark recently, where traffic at airports and at protected facilities has been disrupted. Although investigations are ongoing, both Denmark and Sweden take the development seriously.
– The mission is fundamentally about protecting an ally's and neighbor's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is also the core of NATO cooperation – to collaborate and strengthen each other for common security, says Ewa Skoog Haslum, head of operations at the Swedish Armed Forces, in the agency's press release.
The Swedish contribution consists of systems that can detect and counter drones using sensors and jamming equipment. Similar systems have recently been used in the Gotland Sentry operation and in connection with the Air Force's NATO mission in Poland.
In addition to the unit contribution, Sweden has also lent several advanced radar systems to Denmark. These systems, which the Prime Minister describes as among the best in the world, were sent as early as Thursday.
The background is several major meetings in Copenhagen on October 1–2, including an informal EU summit on European defense and support for Ukraine, as well as a meeting of the European Political Community with participants from a total of 47 countries. The agenda includes drone threats, hybrid influence, and the security situation in Europe. In the days leading up to the meetings, the Danish Defense has confirmed several observations of drones at military facilities, including Flyvestation Skrydstrup and the Jydske Dragon Regiment's barracks in Holstebro.
